What are Essential Oils?

You might have heard of essential oils, but may not understand exactly what they are, how they are made and what they are useful for. You may even be a bit skeptical, as I first was, and are wondering if they are even effective in promoting healing.

Here is a definition from YoungLiving's website "about" page:

"Essential oils, known as nature’s living energy, are the natural, aromatic volatile liquids found in shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. The distinctive components in essential oils defend plants against insects, environmental conditions, and disease. They are also vital for a plant to grow, live, evolve, and adapt to its surroundings. Essential oils are extracted from aromatic plant sources via steam distillation, and are highly concentrated and far more potent than dry herbs.
While essential oils often have a pleasant aroma, their chemical makeup is complex and their benefits vast—which makes them much more than something that simply smells good."

How do you use essential oils?

There are many ways to use essential oils including the following:
  • Inhalation via diffuser, vaporizer, bath or simply smelling them.
  • Topically with or without the use of a carrier oil.
  • Internally by placing directly on tongue, adding to a liquid or food, adding to a capsule, or using in agave syrup.
You can find a more detailed description of how to use them here.

Our Story

Our girls, ages 6 and 4, have had the normal amount of doctor visits for your average child. They have each had a round or two of antibiotics for an infection here or there. They get fevers from time to time, which we would give tylenol for if it went higher than 103 or so. Basically, it all seemed pretty  normal and so we followed the normal protocol when they got sick, by letting their bodies fight it and using medicine when necessary.

When our son, age 2, came along it all seemed rather normal again. That is, until he contracted RSV and Bronchilitis at 5 months. The poor little guy had a rough time of it...very high fever, completely miserable, very congested, etc. We gave him antibiotics and he seemed to get better. A month later he started a fever and got terribly congested in his chest, complete with wheezing...and the cycle began. We started using Albuterol and steroid treatments which didn't help much and then he went on an antibiotic that while it cleared his congestion, it gave him diarrhea for about a month.

To make a long story shorter, the next 12 months of his life consisted of him getting colds that would go straight to his chest, resulting in recurrent pneumonia in which we would try albuterol and steroids, both liquid and nebulized. Those treatments didn't work so we would use antibiotics which would clear him up, until 2 months later when the whole cycle would start again. We tried using other natural remedies as well, but they didn't help him either. I disliked putting him on so many rounds of antibiotics, as well as the albuterol and steroids, but it seemed to be the only way to clear up the congestion. We of course did not want scar tissue to continue to grow on his lungs, so it was a hard decision.

We even took him to a pediatric lung specialist who gave the diagnosis of probable acid reflux. They wanted to put him on medication for that, but I declined in fear of messing up his digestive system on top of his respiratory system, when his digestive system seemed to be in okay working order. We also took him to a speech/feeding therapist to see if he was aspirating when eating, but she saw no signs of any such thing.

My friend had suggested essential oils when he was around 15 months or so, but when I mentioned it to the pediatrician she was concerned about possible skin irritation, so I decided to hold off on using them. When the cycles continued, and I was willing to try anything, I figured a little bit of skin irritation or a minor reaction seemed to be less of a worry then continuing  his body on so many antibiotics and other strong medicines. The next time he got another cold that went right to his chest, we tried the essential oils, using Eucalyptus and R.C. on his chest, with Immupower and Thieves on his feet. After a couple days of this, he was clearing up! I was truly amazed and so thankful that the Lord had provided these wonderful oils that were healing him and not hurting his immune system in the process!

Since then, he has gotten little colds here and there that begins with that chest congestion, and right away I start the oils as well as ImmuPro, and he has handled the colds like a normal child and recovered quickly. His nose even runs-which was never the case before! Even when our family got the whooping cough, he handled it like a champ, without wheezing and continual chest congestion.

We have been using many of the other oils now, including PanAway which has helped my husband's hip pain that he was dealing with for weeks. He had been using Ibuprofen around the clock which was giving little if no relief. We put the PanAway on his hip one night and the next morning he woke up amazed that his hip felt a lot better, and he no longer wanted to use the Ibuprofen.

He also has been using the grapefruit oil in his desire to lose weight and it has curbed his hunger and helped him eat lesser amounts.
